2019.01 - Work in the platform economy: Deliveroo riders in Belgium and the SMart arrangement (Bulletin de ETUI Working Paper, 2019.01 [01/01/2019]) / Jan Drahokoupil
[n° ou bulletin]
Titre : 2019.01 - Work in the platform economy: Deliveroo riders in Belgium and the SMart arrangement Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jan Drahokoupil, Auteur ; Agnieszka Piasna, Auteur Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 43 p. Présentation : tabl.;graph. Langues : Anglais Catégories : plateforme ; Travail Mots-clés : 'Deliveroo','économie de plateforme' Index. décimale : G.04. Nouvelles formes d'emploi Note de contenu : This paper presents a case study of the food delivery platform, Deliveroo, in Belgium in 2016-2018. The case offers insights on the nature of platform work, the workers who perform it, the preferences of workers, the strategy of the platforms, and the role of local regulations. Interestingly, Deliveroo in Belgium employed workers through an intermediary, SMart, and we also observed the termination of their co-operation in the period under analysis. Using administrative data provided by SMart and a survey of workers, we analyse patterns of work and also focus on pay. We investigate the characteristics of the workers, their preferences regarding working conditions and their motivation for engaging in platform work. We identify that the jobs are lowhours and low-income, performed primarily by precarious student workers. We show that the SMart arrangement was motivated primarily by the specifics of the Belgian tax system. Even so, it provided workers with protections that they valued, including income security. Contrary to what the platform claimed, the abandonment of the SMart system did not offer the riders the flexibility they desired. Instead, it reduced their degree of autonomy and control in relation to the platform. Titre : 2019.06 - 'Algorithm breakers' are not a different 'species': attitudes towards trade unions of Deliveroo riders in Belgium Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kurt Vandaele, Auteur ; Agnieszka Piasna, Auteur ; Jan Drahokoupil, Auteur Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 39 p. Présentation : tabl.;graph. Langues : Anglais Catégories : Belgique ; économie collaborative ; Négociation ; plateforme ; Syndicat ; Travail Mots-clés : 'travail de plateforme' 'deliveroo' 'syndicat' 'livraison' 'riders' Index. décimale : G.05. Organisations de travailleurs Note de contenu : This working paper investigates a rare case of platform work performed in the realm of regulated employment and explores the attitudes of platform workers towards collective representation. Using a case study of Deliveroo, a food delivery platform, the paper argues that platform workers are not essentially different to their peers in their attitudes towards trade unions. The paper finds that the riders do not generally hold negative views towards unions, and do not consider unions incompatible with platform work. Instead, there has been a lack of union activity in reaching out to riders as a reason for their non-membership. Titre : 2024.01 - Job quality and digitalisation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Agnieszka Piasna, Auteur Année de publication : 2024 Importance : 36 p. Présentation : graph. Prix : 20 € Note générale : This working paper examines the impact on job quality of new digital technologies at work. It applies the multidimensional framework of the ETUI Job Quality Index to an analysis of the 27 EU Member States and data from the 2021 European Working Conditions Telephone Survey. The effects of digitalisation are conceptualised on the basis of two theoretical approaches: one considers the impact of computerised systems and algorithmic management on task allocation, working time and work intensity; the other looks at digitalisation at work in terms of job demands and resources. The analysis examines how the use of computerised systems at work and their influence on the content and organisation of work affect different dimensions of job quality and how this may differ across groups of workers. Titre : The future of remote work Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Nicola Contouris, Editeur scientifique ; Valerio De Stefano, Editeur scientifique ; Agnieszka Piasna, Editeur scientifique Editeur : Bruxelles [Belgique] : European Trade Union Institute Année de publication : 2023 Importance : 237 p. Présentation : tabl.;graph. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-2-87452-671-8 Prix : 30 € Note générale : Debates on the future of work have taken a more fundamental turn in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Early in 2020, when large sections of the workforce were prevented from coming to their usual places of work, remote work became the only way for many to continue to perform their professions. What had been a piecemeal, at times truly sluggish, evolution towards a multilocation approach to work suddenly turned into an abrupt, radical and universal shift. It quickly became clear that the consequences of this shift were far more significant and far-reaching than simply changing the workplace’s address. They involved a series of rapid, blockbuster transformations that were going to outlast the ‘mandatory lockdown’ phase of the pandemic. Langues : Anglais Catégories : Droit social ; plateforme ; Travail Mots-clés : 'remote work','télétravail','working conditions' Index. décimale : E.03 Sociologie du travail Note de contenu : The 12 chapters collected in this volume provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the impact and the future trajectories of remote work. They raise, discuss and explore fundamental questions emerging around remote work: from the nexus between the location from where work is performed and how it is performed to how remote locations may affect the way work is managed and organised, as well as the applicability of existing legislation. Additional questions concern remote work’s environmental and social impact and the rapidly changing nature of the relationship between work and life.
The contributions in this edited volume develop along several complementary axes, ranging from the discussion of global and societal dynamics to the implications for the contractual relationship between employers and workers. The transformation of the spatial component of work is considered both as a potential paradigm shift for the world of work and as a challenge for the implementation of specific regulatory regimes. An important insight that emerges from the multidimensional approach of this volume is that the establishment of a worker centred future of (remote) work requires the exploration and development of constructive pathways at different levels and in different directions involving the role of regulators, courts, trade unions, researchers, businesses and workers themselvesEn ligne : https://www.etui.org/publications/future-remote-work The future of remote work [texte imprimé] / Nicola Contouris, Editeur scientifique ; Valerio De Stefano, Editeur scientifique ; Agnieszka Piasna, Editeur scientifique . - Bruxelles (Belgique) : European Trade Union Institute, 2023 . - 237 p. : tabl.;graph.
