Arts plastiques | Note de contenu : | Paci contemporary is glad to present Teun Hocks, a Dutchman artist characterized by a photographic sarcasm which, closing the gap between painting and photography, offers an absurd and ironic parody of reality. His pictures have a cinematographic soul, not only in a conceptual way, but also embedded in the creative process. Beginning from a watercolour depicting the first ideas, he builds and paints a photographic set, double-checking everything during the preparation by comparing digital photographs with the original drawing. When satisfied, he shoots eight images on black and white film, from which he choses the one to print. After having developed three large format analog prints on photographic paper with a sepia tone, he paste them to an aluminium plate and starts colouring over the images with transparent oil paint. His extraordinary artistic commitment and the combination of these characteristics create scenes similar to surreal portals or cosmic settings. Teun Hocks needs the surrealism to transcend the conformity of a trivial and tedious society. The setting has a conceptual elaboration, letting emerge irrationality and absurdity, a real, ironical parody of craziness, showing lot of wit and humour. In his works, the artist focusses on his individual actions and universal experiences, but the existential contradictions remains unsolvable and floating in an enigmatic irony. | En ligne : | http://teunhocks.nl/publications/ |
